This course is taught by Paul Miller. . The Diploma is acceptable for the Celestial Navigation portion of the upgrade of your license by the United States Coast Guard. In addition it is necessary to obtain a RADAR and FIRE FIGHTING endorsement for the Oceans Endorsement.
If your desire is to operate a commercial sailing vessel it is necessary to have a sailing endorsement on your license. To obtain this sailing endorsement you may take our on the water Sailing I course or complete the four hour Coast Guard approved class. Successful passing of this course and the examination will qualify you for this endorsement. It is necessary to identify yourself to the Instructor at the beginning of our regular sailing courses , if you are taking the course for an USCG License. The special sailing endorsement class is 4 hours and is scheduled approximately every 4 months.

During this course, you will learn the methods of navigating offshore solely by use of a sextant and sightings on the sun, planets, stars and Polaris. Successful completion and passing the United States Coast Guard approved CSA Celestial Navigation exam earns the sailor the academic portion of the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD CELESTIAL NAVIGATION ENDORSEMENT and the ASA "Celestial Navigation Standard" along with becoming proficient in Traditional Navigation. Prerequisites for this course are Coastal Piloting or the equivalent. Paul J. Miller is the instructor of this course.

Unlike most Radar Courses this course is taught and practiced. Professional licensed mariners teach the Unlimited Radar Course and 4-day Inland Radar Course ashore and afloat. The Inland and Unlimited courses are actually taught concurrently.
The first four days covers the Inland course. The Unlimited students continue for an additional day thus a total of 5 days. The course begins in the classroom with theory, plotting, collision avoidance with radar simulators. The course then moves onto offshore vessels to practice with actual seagoing radars. The latest techniques of using Radar and Large Display Garmin GPS equipment coupled by NMEA will also be incorporated. Practical assessment exercises will be conducted both in the classroom and afloat.
Upon successful completion of our course you will have the skills necessary to become a competent radar operator whether for recreational or professional sea going captains.
