It is necessary to have documented Sea Service either onboard your own vessel or on a vessel which you have served as crew. In that our diplomas are good for one year from graduation you have another year to complete your sea time before application to the Coast Guard.
The U.S. Coast Guard Officer in Charge (OIC) at each Regional Exam Center makes the final decisions on the approval of sea time. During the course we will supply you with the necessary forms for declaration of sea time, medical exams, CPR and First Aid. We will assist you in preparing these forms and direct you to Clinics for inexpensive medical exams.
OUPV and Mate licenses require 360 days of Sea Time. Masters need 720 days. Both need 90 days of recent time, as part of the total time, within the past 3 years. Since our certificate is good for one year, you do not have to have all of your sea time prior to taking our course. The U.S. Coast Guard Officer in Charge (OIC) makes final decisions on all sea time approvals.
On the U.S. Coast Guard website www.uscg.mil/STCW/m-forms.htm you will find the latest requirements and forms for all licenses.

You need no other abilities other then to accomplish simple addition, subtraction, and division using a four-function calculator. The diploma for successful completion of the course is good for one year. If application is not made to the USCG by that time it will be necessary to either retake the course and exams or take the Coast Guard Exams at a Regional Exam Center. Proper sea time and seagoing experience is of course necessary before your license can be issued.
